My daughter, who was 14 at the time, was having hip pain during volleyball season in the fall of 2019. After volleyball, she was in extreme pain and it was making her life difficult.
We took her to a doctor who said she had snapping hip syndrome and needed physical therapy. After a few weeks, her therapist was not satisfied with her progression and recommended that she have an MRI. Once the MRI was complete, the doctor couldn't find any aliments aside from snapping hip and said if she was having more pain she could try injections. I was not thrilled with the idea of my 14-year old daughter getting injections.
Our therapist recommended making an appointment with Dr. Thomas Ellis to get a second opinion. Dr. Ellis looked at the same MRI images as the first doctor and could see that she had slight hip dysplasia which caused her to have snapping hip, CAMs, and a torn labrum. Dr. Ellis and his team performed surgery on her right hip at Dublin Methodist Hospital in January 2020, and she was able to play volleyball in the fall of 2020. Dr. Ellis performed the same procedure on her left hip in October 2020. She is about a month or so away from recovery and heading on to do great things without pain!
Thank God for second opinions, Dr. Ellis, and his amazing team!
I was really active in college, but began experiencing hip and back pain. Doctors said I had hip dysplasia – but offered no next step. I thought this was just how my life was going to be. After searching for solutions online, I found experts at Orthopedic ONE who could fix my problem. I got off crutches and never looked back. Orthopedic ONE absolutely changed my life.
My husband and I married in 2016 with a bucket list of traveling and hiking plans. Shortly after our honeymoon, I started to experience pain in my left hip. The pain eventually became so bad that I was not able to walk through the grocery store. After trying physical therapy and a few other doctors, I was finally referred to Dr. Ellis and in July of 2017, he diagnosed me with Hip Dysplasia in both hips, but it was worse in my left. I underwent my left PAO and labrum repair surgery in November 2017. I was finally recovered and feeling ready for physical activity again by the summer of 2018, but I was starting to feel the same pain that I had felt in my left hip, in my right hip. In the spring of 2019, I decided to see Dr. Ellis about my right hip and I scheduled my right hip PAO and labrum repair in June. This recovery was much easier and I was cleared to start running by November of 2019! Finally I was healthy and my husband and I decided to book our first hike, to Patagonia. On March 9, 2020, we started an 8 day, 80 mile, backpacking trip through Torres del Paine. We saw mountains, glaciers, forests covered in moss, drank glacier water, and loved every second of it! Once we finished our hike through Torres del Paine, we were supposed to go to Argentina to hike more, but unfortunately with Covid-19, we were not able to make it into the country and had to cut our trip short. But most importantly, I was able to make it through the whole hike through Torres del Paine with no hip pain! Thank you so much Dr. Ellis and his team for everything you have done for me! My husband and I are already planning our next hike and we wouldn't be able to do any this without you!
After my surgeries, I have achieved so many great things academically and in athletics. In March 2024, I competed at NDA High School Nationals just two months after getting eight screws removed from my hips and five months after my second PAO surgery. My team placed second and third in the nation. In April 2024, I started my fourth season on my high schools varsity dance team, as well as my third year as varsity captain. In July 2024, around 9 months after my second surgery, I was named to the NDA All-American team and awarded my second NDA Excellence in Leadership Award. In August 2024, I was a year out from my first surgery and was dancing almost at my full potential again. In February 2025, I led my team to a fourth place finish in both the AAA pom and AAA kick categories at IHSDTA State Finals, while also being named to the Academic All-State team and receiving 1 of 5 IHSDTA Scholarships. The next weekend, I competed at Solo State Finals and placed in the top 10 out of over 60 senior soloists in the state of Indiana. I will be attending Butler University in the fall to major in Psychology with a minor in Sports Coaching, with the hopes of being a Sports Performance Psychologist. I will also be trying out for the nationally ranked Butler Dance Team in just over a month. None of these great accomplishments would have ever been possible without the help of Dr. Ellis and the Orthopedic ONE staff. I am so grateful for all of the guidance they have given me throughout my journey both before and after my surgeries.
Keith recently caught up with us to share his daughter's incredible progress following PAO (Periacetabular Osteotomy) surgery with Dr. Tom Ellis. He reported that EXACTLY one year after her surgery while competing in a league championship event, Emma earned first place in the 100m medley relay, first in the 200m freestyle (breaking the record!), and third in the 50m freestyle!
When I met Dr. Ellis to discuss my PAO surgery, I cried because I thought I was going to be done being an athlete and playing softball. At that very appointment, Dr. Ellis told me he'd get me back to playing softball and I'd be stronger than ever… and I am! I'm pain free, doing all the sports I love, and just signed my letter of intent to play college softball at Ohio Dominican University this fall. I can't thank Dr. Ellis and Dave Kohlreiser enough for their wonderful care, and for getting me back to the ball field.
In October I had a lot of pain in my right hip and I couldn't take the pain anymore. Then I was recommended to Dr. Ellis, he is such a wonderful and caring person. He got right down to it, found out what was wrong, and I had my surgery on the 22nd. Dr. Ellis and his staff are amazing, I could not have asked for a better medical team. This is the first time since October that I was able to put all my weight on my leg. I would recommend him to anyone. Thank you Orthopedic ONE for everything you did for me, and the staff at Ohio Orthopedic Surgery Institute, you guys are the best. Everyone there are so sweet and nice.
I had seen two surgeons prior to Dr. Ellis. I hadn't felt comfortable with either one. My physical therapist recommended that I have a consult with Dr. Ellis, as he had seen his work through other patients.
The Dublin office was able to get me in right away. Dr. Ellis was so kind and explained everything and the procedure he described was less invasive. I had my first hip replacement (the worse hip) in April and upon waking in recovery, I noticed the difference. The second surgery was in June. Dr. Ellis saved my life. I had become so depressed from my pain. These surgeries took that pain away. God works in amazing ways. He led me to Dr. Ellis.
I recommend him to everyone, including my mother, who traveled three hours to see him. Before surgery I was miserable. I couldn't walk. I couldn't sleep. He saved me. Thank you Dr. Ellis for being amazing!
I was 34 years old, in the best physical shape of my life. As a law enforcement officer, I was used to exercising everyday, never once thinking about what it would mean if my normal daily living was altered. While on duty, I suffered what would be a serious injury to my left hip. I was seen by several doctors who recommended me to another doctor back home (all the other doctors thought my injury was too complicated for them to fix). This doctor attempted to fix my hip, but on the operating table he realized my injuries were to severe for him to fix. He backed out and recommended Dr. Thomas Ellis. I was advised that Dr. Ellis was the doctor who could fix me.
From the very first, I could see why Dr. Ellis was thought of in such high regard. He was very professional and knowledgeable about complicated hip conditions. It would be easy to end there with my testimonial, but that would not due justice to my story and the blessing of Dr. Ellis.
Dr. Ellis performed what would be my first successful hip surgery. I was seen by him and another doctor afterwards, both giving me a great prognosis report, unfortunately I fell 10 days after surgery, causing all kinds of complications.
Dr. Ellis went above and beyond to repair my hip trying to get me back to a normal life where I could enjoy my normal daily activities, which include caring for my toddler, son after my fall. I have had my hip replaced as a result of my complications from a fall. I was lucky to have him perform this surgery as well.
He answers all questions and provides you with detailed timetables and expectations you can have after surgery. But this is just the tip of the iceberg, as Dr. Ellis has provided care to me I have never known by a doctor. As a result of my life being altered so much from my injuries I have developed some severe depression and anxiety. Dr. Ellis has been there every step of the way caring about my physical and mental well-being. He helped refer me to see someone who could help me deal with the emotional aspect of my injury in addition to asking me how I am mentally doing every time I go to his office. I share this to give readers a perspective of his bedside manner.
This caring atmosphere is not only shared by Dr. Ellis though. The entire staff shows the same professionalism and caring to each of their patients. I have never had a bad experience or interaction with anyone at Orthopedic ONE.
If you are nervous or scared about your future due to injury, Dr. Ellis and the staff at Orthopedic ONE are the ones you want go with!
After many years of right hip pain, I noticed a decline in my mobility when I began falling while performing everyday activities like mowing the grass or going on a walk. My doctor recommended physical therapy, which did not help. I then sought the advice of an orthopedic specialist who gave me a cortisone injection. Unfortunately, this did not provide any relief either. Eventually, I ended up having an MRI to examine my hip and was told that a full tear in my gluteus minimus had been the source of my pain for all these years! The orthopedic specialist advised that the tear could not be fixed and that I would need to rely on a cane for the rest of my life. At 62 years old, this was not an acceptable answer to me, so I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Thomas Ellis at Orthopedic ONE for a second opinion. After a successful surgical repair on Feb 13, 2017, my recovery is right on schedule according to Dr Ellis, Tiffany his Physician Assistant and Dave Kohlrieser my Physical Therapist. After years of restless nights, I can now sleep soundly without pain. In addition to my physical therapy sessions, walking in the pool at the Grove City YMCA has been a great way to build strength in my leg. I hope to give up my cane within the next few weeks and ride my bicycle by the end of the summer!
Thanks to Dr Ellis and the staff at Orthopedic ONE for giving me my active life back!!
I was training for a marathon in the fall of 2017, with the hopes of qualifying for the Boston Marathon, when suddenly I couldn't bear to run for more than ten minutes. I visited local doctors and they ruled out FAI without doing any physical tests. I had an x-ray, a cortisone shot, and two MRIs, but still nothing. It had been almost six months of trial and error and gradually worsening pain when we decided to have a different doctor take a look at the tests, and they found a spur on the ball of my right femur. I heard about Orthopedic ONE through word of mouth and decided to come up to Dublin from Huntington, WV. I got instructions for pre-surgery PT from Dave Kohlrieser and met the team of people who would help me get back on track. We scheduled a surgery date for May 14th, and it's been exactly ten months since I had my procedure done by Dr. Ellis. It's hard to express how grateful I am for the things I'm able to do now. Recovery was relatively pain-free, and while PT was tough at times, I feel like I am back to full strength. I am currently playing on intramural soccer and basketball teams at my school while also running about fifteen miles a week without any problems. This past weekend, I participated in a small triathlon in the community and ended up placing in first out of about 75 people. I say this not to brag, but to reflect on how far I've come. This time last year, I had no answers and was in more pain with each passing day. Walking to class became a struggle at times, and I had no physical outlet to release stress. At 21 years old, I am enjoying my able body now more than ever, and I know I wouldn't be in such a great position without the work of everyone at Orthopedic ONE. Any time someone asks me about the procedure and the care I received there, I have nothing but good things to say. Thank you to everyone who helped me get back to full strength!
After my professional track career as a steeplechaser, I decided to move to the marathon and train for the Olympic Trials. However, while training I started to experience groin tightness when I would run. After a very discouraging year of trying every kind of physical therapy and treatment under the sun, I finally got an MRI and learned that a labral tear in my hip was the cause of my groin pain. My physical therapist recommended I see Dr. Ellis, as he is one of the best hip surgeons in the country. I quickly made my appointment and visited him and Dave Kohlrieser. They assured me that I would get back to my passion and run pain-free again.
My experience with their team was incredible, and after a successful surgery, I have already raced two half marathons one year post-surgery. I am incredibly grateful to Orthopedic One for delivering exceptional care for me before, during, and after the surgery. Thank you for allowing me to get back to doing what I love!
Toward the middle of my Junior season, I fractured my hip socket, and tore my labrum, and played the rest of the season and playoffs. I knew I wouldn't be able to make it through another off season of training and full game schedule if I did nothing about it. So my family and I sought out the best hip surgeon we could find. Through our research with elite runners and athletes, we found Dr. Tom Ellis. Unfortunately, the surgery that I required was going to take 6-8 months of recovery time, which meant that I might miss my senior season. Despite it being a two and a half hour drive to get to the office of Dr. Ellis, I knew I was seeing the best, and boy were the long drives worth it. Dr. Ellis and his team communicated with my parents and I about every step of the process. I know he had other patients, but I felt like I was the only one. They were able to work around my schedule as a busy Junior/Senior and we did virtual sessions to accommodate the two and a half hour distance. I did exactly what Dave Kholrieser told me to do and despite some twists and turns in my recovery; I was back on the field by game three. We are in the middle of a playoff run and I have committed to play college football at Denison University. Without Dr. Tom Ellis and Dave's help, I don't know where I'd be today.
My hip pain gradually worsened over the years. I went from walking every day to not doing much of anything due to the pain. Once I finally got up the nerve to see Dr. Ellis, the x-ray showed no cartilage in my left hip. Dr. Ellis suggested an anterior hip replacement. Everyone involved at the surgery center was very professional and personable. I limped into the surgery center at 5:30 a.m., my surgery was scheduled for 7:00 a.m. As I was wheeled into surgery the clock showed 7:02 p.m. I was awake in recovery by 9:40 a.m. The nurse had me walking the hallway and up and down stairs about 1:30 p.m. Then I walked out to the car at 2:00 p.m. It is like a miracle to walk with no pain. Don't let fear keep you from having this surgery. There are a few weeks of recovery-taking it easy and using the walker and then a cane. After that you are on your way to live your life! Thank you Dr. Ellis and all the people at Orthopedic ONE!!
I had hip and back pain for 15-plus years. I knew I needed to do something about it when golf took longer to play each time. Sometimes I'd quit after 9 holes or not play at all. Finally, after playing several rounds of golf in a few short days and losing to my son in July 2022, I reached out to Dr. Ellis and decided to get the Medacta total hip replacement.
I had surgery in September 2022. I took pain medication the first day, then ibuprofen for a couple of weeks. Zero pain and I mean zero!
Full driver swing exactly four months after surgery, but I feel I could've done it much sooner. I played three rounds at Pinehurst at the end of March 2023 and beat my son in 2 out of 3 matches from the same tees. Now at the end of June, I'm ready for 18-36 holes a day for the next two weeks!
My back pain is gone too. It feels amazing to get out of my truck and walk into the office without pain. I've gone from a hurting 63-year-old man to a pain-free 64-year young man.
I may be the exception or the rule, I don't know, but I like it!
Last December, I received a total hip replacement from Dr. Ellis using the Anterior Approach. His surgical skill, bedside manner and methodology are all excellent and have led to a very successful outcome for me. Before my procedure, we made a plan to ensure that my recovery went as smooth as possible. For the first 6 weeks, I was told to take it fairly easy while performing the prescribed exercises and using ice to prevent swelling. At 3 to 4 weeks post op, I was doing light biking and was able to walk with the assistance of a cane. By 6 weeks after my surgery, I was riding the stationary bike and walking, which then progressed to more challenging exercises which I still do to this day. Once I had reached the two months post surgery mark, I was able to carefully hike in the mountains, hit the elliptical fairly hard, complete a full yoga class and workout like I did prior to the surgery. I only experienced slight pain the evening of my surgery and I have had no real pain since. I sleep better, walk better and played my first 9 holes of golf this week! Thank you Dr. Ellis and staff for giving me my good heath back and allowing me to do the things I want to do in life!
